I know not energy but: I had a stand off back in March, when just out of hospital and VERY ill, about my water bill: £225... While it is usually about £100. They said: yes, your consumption is well below average so we have estimated the average for you. Me: errrr, tiny home, one person, extremely frugal with the precious resource: not average! Oh but surely, you wash your car? No, never wash my car. Sprinkle your lawn? No lawn, I don't water my garden, I have a rain garden system where I collect 5000 litres and run it into the garden when needed... Oh, well, then you have to take a reading yourself. Me: I am seriously ill with cancer, I can barely stand up, let along lie on my stomach in the snow to take a reading in a hole in the ground. Him: then you must pay. Just had my next bill: consumption for the whole year: £250!!! Tadah! Told them so! Huge credit applied to my account and my dd is barely noticeable now. But: at the time I had no income and no benefits so it really hit me hard!

That's awful hann.
I have to ask though... you pay for water? I knew there were water bills in England, but you pay for the amount you use?

That's great news, you've been battling with them for a long time about those big water bills

Yes Ronnie, we pay for what we use and another portion based on that for waste water

You pay what you use if you have a water meter. Nor all properties have a meter though, either by choice or because they can't. If you don't have a meter then you pay a flat monthly rate based on your house size.

Not metered in Scotland. Unless you get the water board bloke up cos someone dobbed you in for having horses, then they install a meter and charge that separately! G

Presumably having horses consumes a lot of water? If you are using such a lot, it's only fair that you should pay for it.

NE, agree. Though our costs haven't gone up much as commercial metering is quite low, and we are very careful with water we use. Probably cost them more to put the meter in, to be honest! G

There isn't space in the corner of our kitchen for a meter to be installed where the water comes in, and if we had one installed under the pavement just outside we would be paying for water for the whole row of terraces not just our own. Similarly, because of the way the water is supplied to the row, when our next door neighbour's cellar was flooding due to a split in the lead pipe that supplies the mains water, the supply for the whole row had to be turned off until someone who can deal with lead pipes was found to fix it (most plumbers won't touch them it seems!).
I suspect we end up paying more than if we had a meter as a result (although we do get a discount for trying to get one and failing), but I guess if you have a small house and use a lot of water you could end up paying less than if you had a meter.

Ours is in addition to, not instead of, home size based domestic water pricing. But as NE says, probably fair enough. G
