Agree easing off wasn't the issue there, it was how early with a lack of attention.

He was so far in the lead, it's very peculiar. I'd guess he was just trying to copy the behaviour of elites as 16yos might do, but getting it horribly wrong.

On rewatching I did wonder if there was any possibility he thought the wrong line was the finish. But that seems unlikely.
