Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Electric car anyone?

Tesla seem to have managed the over the air update - my Model 3 has installed 10 to 20 over the couple of years I have had it. Yesterday it did one and it connects the home wifi to download the image and then waits until you give it the okay to install. Whole process takes no more than 10 minutes.

Another successful challenge negotiated for the EV at weekend. 175 miles up and 150 back doing support duties on West Highland Way race. Was asked once "surely you'll have to charge somewhere" and I replied, no. Not until we're all rested and done at the end. The car can go longer than we can! A wee 1 hour charge at my convenience while we watched the prize giving.

A thumbs up for improved convenience of charging by the way. This was Fort William, in Highlands of Scotland (admittedly, a bustling town and busy, popular tourist destination). Loads of chargers, one I wanted 100 metres from where we were supporting at the finish was available. Plugged in then couldn't find my Chargeplace Scotland card, minor panic, but no matter, it takes a contactless card, and I swipe with my phone. Charge starts. I get back to unplug and it's already finished. £35. And charging at home again for free on solar. I really don't mind paying £35 for a very convenient, no hassle top up for 325 miles occasionally, and the rest for free! :-) G

In Italy on my hols. Travelled from Hull via Rotterdam, Colmar, Weggis and now in Stresa. No problems charging the car along the way and already 800 miles from home. Car is a breeze up and over the Alpine mountain passes.

Excellent. How does charging work in foreign parts. Just wave debit or credit card and plug in? Or do you have to register something? :-) G

I have several cards that I take with me. Octopus and Shell are the ones which seem to work in most places but some I can wave my bank card if the others don't work. Not had to use any apps so far but I did last year in Germany.

Whilst in the UK I used Fastned a couple of times and then registered my car with them so over in France I could just connect the car and charging started automatically.

I use zapmap to find chargers when away from home, but the last two holidays we've been on we've found chargers that aren't on zapmap. How comprehensive is zapmap, is it starting to lose its edge and is there a better alternative?

ABRP seems more comprehensive when I've compared side by side for journeys I've done.

Yeah, I'm finding Google maps is as up to date as Zapmap. Zapmap has the benefit of users reporting faulty chargers and you can see in semi real time if they are busy. But again, faulty is sometimes user error and busy changes, so I've just happily looked on Google maps when planning my journey and taken my chances that they won't be broken or in use. And I'm up to 5 charges in 2 years now (!) and 100% success! :-) G
