Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Electric car anyone?

75p would be more expensive for me, like for like vehicle equivalent. But as an occasional top-up for a vehicle that’s mostly charged overnight, no big deal.

My regular long trip to visit my mother is close to the limit of realistic range, so I’m expecting a half hour top up with a coffee stop (which I always have anyway) just to make sure.

Mind you being realistic that trip won’t go on for ever and I’ve not even got an EV yet!

Yes, sun is shining - so car is topped up to 90%, washing machine is on to take advantage of solar power to run and dry the outcome!

I think in Scotland with an EV, it's not worth me moving to Octopus Agile.

40p export between 16.00 and 20.00. But about 28p ave off peak would be *much* more expensive to charge the car, if I don't have enough sun for house and battery to export and to charge the car. Charging from the grid would wipe out my benefit of exporting at a much higher price.

Wind would sort me and make it worthwhile. But wind is still... tricky!

jda, or use the trickle charge cable at your mum's, if staying overnight? 18 hours would give you 45 kWh top up? (obviously pay her back, don't nick the electricity! ;-) ) :-) G

Oh yes I'll definitely do that HG, it's the one-way trip is close to the limit but I'm always staying a couple of nights min so can set off full of off-peak.

Took delivery of My EV today (MG5 EV Long Range Trophy) :D All very exciting and new. Also, add to the fact I have never driven an automatic, I was very close to going straight through my garden gate...
Will take it out properly later after work, see if I can make it to sainsburys unscathed!

EV was my first auto too, that was the biggest change to get used to.

I'm currently in a Focus automatic and it is horrid by comparison with the EV. The unpredictability of the mechanical gear shift, lag in power delivery etc.

Good luck with the Saisnbury's trip!!

Nice PJH (though I read "Will take it out properly later..." as referring to your poor garden gate! :-O )

I nearly went for the MGZS the SUV type thing. The new MG5 looks quite nice, and very practical in long range. I saw an MG4 on a drive while out running recently. I wouldn't be embarrassed to drive one and it has great range for lowest buy price I have seen. Will def look out for any of these, second hand, next year when I come to buy.

I have extended the least on my Hyundai Kona for another year. £28 less a month, still including full servicing, tyres etc. I love it when a cost goes down, not up! :-) G

Interestingly, Tesla 3 second hand prices are dropping quite rapidly. Combination of new prices dropping and probably early adopters trading up, who always want latest models. With my increasing confidence in the reliability and longevity of these things, I'd happily get one.

A 20,000 mile 3 year old is as low as £28,000. Obviously a lot of money still, but very cheap to run, pretty comfy inside with leather, sunroof, decent stereo and all the computer assistance and 5.3s to 60mph performance. That seems like quite a deal? :-) G

Fizz :-)
I’d be wary tbh. My three year old Tesla came with a range of approx 300m, maybe 280 at 90% charge, I can’t exactly remember now. We’ve driven approx 20k miles, mostly only used a trickle charger (which I’ve been told is better for the battery) and the range is now 250m at 90%. If it was a car I’d bought instead of a company one I’d be very disappointed.

That's only 10% deterioration, isn't it? 280 down to 250? And if that is in 3 years, that seems OK? Not ideal, but not bad. And again, who knows if it will stay at that for 5 years rather than continuing to go down.

It's a good point though Fizz. Will def need to look and see if there are any real world figures on battery deterioration for different models. :-) G
