Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

No need to sneak! All info gratefully received. Will read when I can.

Skim - I agree with inequity. Though that was true of the first cars over foot too. :-) G

Afternoon all, some great news - our car is ready to be collected, a month earlier than their schedule from 3 weeks ago suggested (suspect they want it billed in March).

Sadly we're going away for two weeks on Friday, so it's not ideal timing. have agreed to collect on Friday 21st April, exciting :-)

So jacdaw, attempt at summary (please correct if I've got it wrong)

EVs are "structural violence" (ie a harm done to society by a process or strategy)

- inequitable. Not everyone can afford them. The paper admits this was true of ICE cars too.
- shifts carbon production to selectivity generators. True but let's at same time solve electricity generation with reneables
- it's only a stopgap, problem still exists even if all cars were EVs (the "bubble")

So the main argument is that governments and policy makers aren't strong enough to do everything. And out of the "somethings" to do, this isn't the best.

I would agree with the second point, but not the first. We need to do, as IPCC says, Everything, everywhere, all at once. So

ICE -> EV ... and...
Electricity generation to renewables inc storage ... and...
Private transport to shared and public transport ... and...
Equal access to money, resources and world peace.

Yip, all of that. :-) G

Mt take home was, EVs are better in some ways than ICEVs, but worse in others (greater inequity, more space taken from public realm), and that we are danger of missing the point that an overall reduction in privately owned vehicles is by far the most desirable outcome.

I would argue that increasingly more public space is going to be given over to car charging especially by LAs as car parking / charging is a lucrative profit centre when their budgets are being pared to the bone by central govt.

Agree with both, but still better than ICEs, and direct, tailpipe emissions. Not a panacea, not a silver bullet, but part of the essential, overall transition away from oil and gas.

But completely agree, we need to do more and faster to: improve shared transport, improve public transport, reduce consumption, reduce waste, decarbonise electricity generation etc. AS WELL.

But I don't see "Stop EVs" as being a useful action either. :-) G

In my (limited) experience, EV charging spaces are generally being increased and use ICE parking spaces in existing car parks. This is anecdotal. It would be interesting to see if the total number of car parking spaces is increasing and if increases are being driven by EVs.

I know of one instance where recycling bins were removed from a car park to convert the space to EV charging bays.

I doubt EV charging is particularly lucrative Fields with the cost of power. It may be a trickle of new cash but hardly setting the world alight.
