It's an interesting debate to have and I'd definitely put my hands up and say that to a degree I found the motivation to go EV to be a mix of greenwashing, cost and early adopter-ness. My Prof of Eco-stuff brother in law was the first to point out to me the limitations of how green EVs really are, whereas I am happier with them just being relatively greener, on balance. The cheap cost to run (because of the way we own the car) was a big plus too.
I did start the thread to get opinions on the cars themselves, but I think it's a legitimate place to have a discussion about whether they are good or not, and where the future of personal transport lies into the future.

We had an old diesel that I really felt should not be in circulation when I realised quite how harmful they are to public health, and my children were in the car for hours every day due to awful school commute, which I then realised was exposing all of us to inhaling a lot of pollutants and would very likely have nasty side effects even though we might never actually realise.
That was the main motivator to switch, but only to a size that suited what we would use it for. If we had owned a newer petrol model I might still have been hemming and hawing.

Agree it's an interesting discussion. Technology will always move on and we hope it moves in a good direction (not *the* good direction, there are multiple directions with different degrees of goodness across multiple axes).

Newer ICEs *are* def getting better. A pal (actually _andy here in Fetch) has bought a modern small (honest Happy Times!) SUV with his wife, less than 1L petrol, but he says it's perfectly powerful enough, and does well over 50mpg.
But that's still all fossil fuel out of the ground, refined and put in cars, then pumped out of the exhaust.
My view is we need to do everything. One of those is to remove all fossil fuel powered ICEs. Whether that's replaced with EVs or something else or not replaced at all, I can't predict. EV is my only option just now. G

Yep, agree with all that HappyG. But we aren't really doing any of it in the UK, just swapping EV for ICE. I don't feel like there's any progress coming on changing behaviour, like we've now seen in so many European cities for a large, worthwhile improvement to quality of life

And I'm not sure there will be while we have such a right wing government with their anti-woke agenda. Woke is thinking about your impacts on others. Doesn't sit well with the Tory I'm alright Jack and Devil take the hindmost mentality.

I have a charging pod installed at home now, but no car yet. Moving in the right direction though.
