Just to add to the comments about not being callous, and I totally agree. I think a sense of relief is the strongest emotion I felt when Dad died - relief for Dad, his partner, and myself.

When I did my mum's probate I sent it in on June 29th, receipt was acknowledged about 8 days later and it was accepted the next. I had the paperwork through on 14th July. I've not heard of a quicker one.

24 Dec to 27 Jan to get the inheritance tax forms cleared & now we can apply for grant of probate. The house went on the market today.

Also: After someone dies, if their home insurance was only in their name, sadly the cover becomes void. But if the policy was in joint names, it will still cover the surviving policyholder (though the names on the policy will need to be updated).

Pension Credit. The rules are a bit complex but if your elderly relative has some sort of disability (in this case dementia/Alzheimer's) and go into a home, they may be able to claim pension credit. So if carers allowance stops, it seems pension credit can start. It can also be backdated.
