A successful visit to FiL to help arrange the telecare call button thing, which in his case is provided free of charge. Still tends to instinctively oppose things when first suggested, but not so strongly, and is starting to realise the benefits of the things my wife has arranged for him....

...still completely in denial about things like his hearing loss, but you can't win them all, so we'll gratefully take whatever wins are on offer...

Visiting my parents and Dad appears to have made another remarkable recovery! However with each illness he becomes overall more frail and is housebound. We were concerned that a local tree surgeon is visiting routinely to persuade them to pay him for hedge cutting, etc (he keeps spotting work to do!) which does feel exploitative although he does a good job. Both are resistant to outside help (gardening, cleaning) particularly Dad, but are easily persuaded by friendly people at the door! Mum is essentially Dad’s carer now so I also worry about the impact on her. I see my visits becoming less frequent but still very regular.

A bit of a mixed bag but sounds positive overall CK2. I'd think a regular gardener would be cheaper than a tree surgeon though? Possibly more use too.

Mandy I had to sort out getting mh Mum to her (ultimately pointless) hospital appointments for her cataracts and hearing problems. A friend who could not do the same for her mother (because of distance) had to pay quite a lot for one of the staff to accompany her via taxi.

Thanks LD - my main issue is mum won't be able to get in my vehicle - it's a camper van and the only vehicle we have

Can you drive to the home then get a taxi together?

I thought I'd start a thread, as lots of us have elderly folks that we worry about/care for.

Also: After someone dies, if their home insurance was only in their name, sadly the cover becomes void. But if the policy was in joint names, it will still cover the surviving policyholder (though the names on the policy will need to be updated).

Pension Credit. The rules are a bit complex but if your elderly relative has some sort of disability (in this case dementia/Alzheimer's) and go into a home, they may be able to claim pension credit. So if carers allowance stops, it seems pension credit can start. It can also be backdated.
