When I was a lad there was a store/bakery called Mathesons, had a tea room in town and it was a treat to visit. They did amazing cakes period and the most amazing caramel donuts.
Sadly they are a shadow of the former company and the quality and variety is long gone but the rose tinted glasses of youth will always keep them on a pedastool

I worked in a children's home in the 1990s and we had a cook. She would make fresh doughnuts about once a week.
