Scottish independence campaign is about to start again. Vote targeted for end next year. Here we go again...! bbc.co.uk Be interesting to see how Johnson handles it. Will he ignore it as a minor issue, with disdain? Will he vociferously support the UK and hope to bolster his own position? Will he inadvertently be the SNP's best asset in the case for getting away from UK and its PM and broken political system? Point of order - would you rather we kept this on thr Politics thread? Dear Scottish Fetchies is for this topic specifically I believe? G |

Feb 2014 Great summary on first page by Davies - 8 years ago. Will be 9 by time of vote. A lot of things have happened in that time. Like being out of EU. Rejoining EU quickly, see Ukraine offer, seems to be much more feasible according to EU. G |

…. Look at the NI border HG. Everything is feasible until realism kicks in and everyone is surprised that the Scottish dream of how we want to live and trade and work with RuK when independent actually depends as much if not more on what Westminster (and Brussels assuming we want to be in the EU) want and has little to do with what Scotlands wants. Independence is forever - not just the Johnson premiership. |

Agree JR, it's not because of Johnson, but he's a flippin brilliant case for leaving the Westminster political system! I don't think a Scotland England border would be a problem. Yes a load of paperwork to trade, but Scotland would increase its trade with the EU too. So I think it would balance out. But yes, def inconveniences for businesses who trade exclusively or largely between Scotland and rUK. Not pretending that isn't a consequence. G |

Scotland trade with RuK is 60% of Scotlands total. Scotland trade with EU is 20%. By comparison UK trade exports with EU were 42% of UK total in 2020. Quite sensible criticism was put to the positions put that UK would increase trade with RoW to compensate a drop off of trade with EU. The challenge for Scotland here is much greater as we rely on RuK more - not helped by the fact that much of Scotlands exports to EU will go via / through RuK. |

I would hope to see a much more honest debate about the costs and benefits. There’s no doubt that trade with rUK would suffer, the question is whether that’s a price worth paying for other benefits. There are certainly many examples of successful small north European countries to look at.

A fantastic opportunity to boost Scotland's ports and shipping And with RuK desperate for trade partners, I'm sure they'd be happy to maintain strong trade links with Scotland. Or we'd cut off their electricity and gas. |
