Could be wrong, but I think Ramprakesh is the England batting coach. I spotted him on the Players' Balcony at the Chester-le-Street ODI

Another great result for us Yorkies... beating Durham by an innings to move above them to the top of the table, and with a game in hand :-)

And, what seems to me at least, a very strange decision to include Rashid in the England squad for the 1st test despite not being invited to the team-bonding trip to Spain. Doesn't he need to bond with his new coach as much as the other players?!?

I thought the explanation given at the time was that after discussion with Rashid, Yorkshire & other parties, the management felt that it would be more useful for him to be getting some overs bowled in the county championship and taking some wickets rather than coming to Spain - and that the fact that they saw fit to specifically mention that made me think that he was already pencilled in for the squad.

If that's the case, then it's slightly more understandable, but I don't remember reading any explanation at the time. A quick Google shows no explanation in the ECB squad announcement and only turns up statements like "Rashid left out of the Ashes squad" and "while all-rounder Chris Jordan and leg-spinner Adil Rashid miss out" in news reports at the time.

They wanted Ali to play for Worcs, so he could bowl and get wickets. Don't remember Rashid getting the same description, although he might have done.

Since Ali didn't and Rashid did and helped Yorkshire to the top of the CC, seems they needed a spinner who can actually take wickets...(and no, that doesn't have to be Rashid, but I think Ali is no more than a support spinner/2nd spinner at best).

Just surprised that Bairstow didn't get close...another ton and he's going to be very hard to ignore.

Just hope Plunkett gets fit again soon so we can get him back if England aren't going to select him.

Middlebrook will be getting a run out against against Worcs now.

It was a discussion on TMS, rather than a press release - and was a couple of days before the actual official announcement, but very much framed as this is what is going to happen and why. I think the implication is that he'll still only be actually picked in individual games if they decide they need a leg spinner for that match.

I'm sure Bairstow is the next cab off the rank for a middle order vacancy.

England seem to have 3 no 6s though, Buttler, Stokes and Ali, all 3 should not be in the same team. Whatever the attack, they need to support Broad and Anderson well by both being economical and taking wickets so our strike bowlers don't burn out. We need Jimmy and Draco Milfoy to stay fit and take 20 wickets each minimum if we are going to win the Ashes back

Chris Jordan for 12th man all summer with his fielding.

Ali is a batsman who can spin ... personally I would play Rashid in the first test. Whoever the spinner is the Aussies are going to look to dominate him as Rashid can turn it both ways I would give him a run in the side because he is a better bowler. However , I think they will go with Ali 1st test because there are too many "IFs" in our batting line-up and they may need runs from Ali at 8 ...
