I see you have the most important 'gents' protection. I shudder at the days when you had to use club kit and didnt have such things of your own

It was nearly the only piece of kit I owned for the entire time I played. Save for an over-oiled bat that saw more balls when I knocked it in more than any batting; and later a pair of second-hand gloves.

Blog is up: fetcheveryone.com/blog/3/2025/1/494553 I was gifted a pair of gloves cast off by one of the adults in the team when I was a teen. I remember the fingers being very stiff - I could never get them to mould to my hands. And a box is the first bit of kit any bloke should invest in. I heard a horror story on the sidelines once, of a player who batted with a cracked box. The ball hit it straight on, bending the plastic which opened up the crack momentarily. I can't recall that story without wanting to cross my legs. |

Yep, back in my cricket playing days, (70s and 80s, uni, a few club 'guest' appearances and a works team) a box was the only bit of kit I had, the rest was all communal carried about in a massive kit bag. Far preferred wicket keeping, but also known to bat a bit (very impatiently, I wasn't a Boycott/Tavaré) and had a surprisingly slow but deadly lofted spin off a 2 step 'run' when wanted. |

I was hit once full on, with a box, and in absolute utter agony. Big red mark on my whites. Didn't continue batting. I couldn't imagine batting without one or even a slightly damaged one. |
