20 overs is about as short as any serious game of cricket should get

I listened to it. They were short on runs, dropped 6 maybe 7 catches, got pulverised early on in the powerplay because of the dropped catches, fields were badly set according to the commentators. Their run rate was not so good because of the manner of their win over Bangladesh. Very bad day at the office really. Knight's injury didn't help.

Or 20 5 ball overs. Someone should pitch that idea.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with 10 over games. It’s no Test Match, but people are still playing cricket. Some people have limited time to be away from family and work. Call it a gateway format.

Given a 20over game is approximately 3h and is often played in an evening, that's comparable to a football match.

Sure it's not a kickabout in the park, but neither is a 10over game.

The problem I have with it is that it further devalues the skills in bowling and it becomes a game where you can almost have 3-4 players and a bunch of hangers on

A football match wouldn't take 3 hours and also there's 5 a side which is even shorter.

Agree bowling probably suffers though.

I'm sure when the hundred was first mooted, I thought T10 made more sense as something different.

From what I've seen it's definitely not a sporting contest.

Though I do see fetch's point, certainly at lower levels at the very least.

Hence my comment about it being a gateway format. Those that enjoy it can seek out more playing time.

And for ‘hangers on’, I’d prefer to see those players as getting the chance to participate. Surely accessibility is important to the game too.

Doesn’t necessarily devalue bowling skills either. Good bowlers have brains, and can learn what type of balls are harder to score off, and which balls get dismissals. As a gateway format, surely that’s the primary skill. Light the spark and see what it gives you.
