Good points well made :)
My view is also coloured by an opposition fast bowler last season - not a professional but reputably on £100 per game. By the time we faced him he'd taken 7 five-fors in the first nine games. One of our younger players who'd coped fine in earlier games got hit several times and ended up in tears. Left a slightly unpleasant taste.
After a single season with the club, that player has now moved on to a club outside the county and is reputedly on a significantly higher figure this season.

[not sure reputably is the word I meant - basically the normally well informed rumour mill stated that ]

When I was in My teens I played for the thirds at sighthill. On arrival we had to clear glass off the wicket. During the oppositions innings the game was paused as a local passed through playing golf.

The opposition had a blower from the 1st XI, he had been dropped and refused to play for the 2nds and so turned it for the 3rds. He was an angry type of chap and was bowling down the hill on a dodgy wicket at a faster pace than I had encountered.

He was pitching short with everything aimed at my ribs and he made lots of contact which just but I just shrugged off. He did eventually find a glove and I was out, but I just thought what a dick head he was.

'refusing to play for the seconds'. We had that at my old tennis club (Chelmsfordians). The seconds were a closed shop, so we (thirds) occasionally got a charity hand-out from the firsts. Our stronger squad players similarly occasionally spent some time completely out of their depth in the firsts being embarrassed by county-level players.

Essex cheating?
From The Times today ... Essex may be docked points after Feroze Khushi’s bat was found to be wider than the gauge used by the umpires in a random check. How wide has not been reported — the Laws specify 11cm

Didn't help much if he was bowled first ball. Should have brought a barn door.

Essex have bigger things than wide bats to worry about.

Is everyone at Chelmsford playing with an extra wide bat?

Very different day today. Could still get a result if the wicket gets temperamental but not sure i can face dragging myself down to the ground if it’s going to be like the last three days. I’ll take a view at lunch and might go down for the afternoon session
