It happens with rugby union. RFU award 15 a side or 7 a side contracts. Not both. England play 7's tournaments while the 15's are playing.

^ as they’re fundamentally different games with one being fast and loose, needs multi-skilled players and is over quickly, and the other with a heavy emphasis on technique, specialist positions and takes about 5 times as long

Sevens is pretty much a non-event in terms of money and people watching, no? Could the average person name an England 7s international? (I couldn't name any 15-aside internationals either, to be fair). That's not the case in cricket. You can stick an extra zero on your salary as a world class white-ball player. Why would we want the test team to be the players who weren't good enough to play IPL? |

Limit domestic internationals to a maximum of 30 days. Can’t play in the test squad unless you fulfil a minimum county obligation of equivalent duration.

All seems to make sense, but 'everyone wants to play white ball cricket and there's a lot if it' is not a unique to England problem. Australia, India, New Zealand, South Africa (esp if they kept hold of their own players) can put out a handy test XI. Perhaps the biggest fellow sufferers are the Windies, and they have a fraction of the resources so it's easy to blame that. So why are we the only top flight, resource rich country that the IPL/white ball generally etc has turned into test playing muppets? |
