England play 7's tournaments while the 15's are playing. Sevens is pretty much a non-event in terms of money and people watching, no? Could the average person name an England 7s international? (I couldn't name any 15-aside internationals either, to be fair). That's not the case in cricket. You can stick an extra zero on your salary as a world class white-ball player. Why would we want the test team to be the players who weren't good enough to play IPL?

Australia, India, New Zealand, South Africa (esp if they kept hold of their own players) can put out a handy test XI. Perhaps the biggest fellow sufferers are the Windies, and they have a fraction of the resources so it's easy to blame that. So why are we the only top flight, resource rich country that the IPL/white ball generally etc has turned into test playing muppets?
