The cost of test tickets hasn’t helped, harder for ordinary working people to attend. Also the ECB discouraging English-based fans of some touring teams eg West Indies attending due to their policies

Nothing beats the ebb and flow of a 5 day test between two closely matched, good teams on a good pitch the rewards good bowling and good batting - the long periods of attrition setting up those decisive, compelling and defining passages of play. Sadly, as an England fan, I haven't seen such a thing for a long while, and prospects in the future look even grimmer. Whilst some gloom is inevitable 2005 showed just how quickly interest can flare up; if another such series was to happen then the same boost would follow. I believe in a rising tide lifting all boats, if more are drawn into the game generally through the short form then they are a larger pool ripe for converting to the longer form if we can sort out some sort of competitive side on the pitch. |

Taking a long long term view, if the ECB decided that the money generated by white ball cricket was sufficient, and granted TV rights of red ball to the BBC for free, then generations of kids would be exposed to the longer form.

That would work. Or could work. Back to my 'basketball killing baseball' comment earlier, didn't it also harm West Indies cricket? I seem to recall this being tutted about in cricket circles - young tall talented West Indians could earn eightpence ha'penny as a fast bowler or go and play in the NBA for genuinely terrifying sums of money. |

If a 'generation of kids' watched the current test team, they'll be lost forever.... But yes some form of free access is required, although 'kids' don't really watch BBC at all these days in the way we oldies relate to. |
