A batsman is always likely to confirm his guard at the start of a new session, and at any point during an innings when he's not sure where it is. If it's all scuffed he'll just ask the ump again. So I can't see why you'd do this hoping to gain an advantage.

After you have been there a while, you are more reassured by it than anything, it is part of your space, so it is definitely getting into someone's head to do it.
