An explanation: my son’s team are playing a team of the coach’s former university mates. In his words “...you wouldn’t want to play rugby against them, but they are TERRIBLE cricketers. I fully expect the U14s to win.”
However, he has also invited 3 of us parents to play too, in a pairs format game. Joe has, rather too emphatically in my opinion, refused the opportunity to bat with me.

When I 1st began playing rugby at U18 level we had a 19 yr old helping coach us. On a couple of occasions of being really short he turned out for us. As did the 19 year old brother of our hooker.

Pothunter
At the end of the season in primary school we had a traditional fathers v sons match. In my brother’s year the fathers were a few short so I got to play for them. The boys were all about 12 or 13, I would have been about 15. I don’t remember batting or bowling but when my brother was batting I caught him out running in from square leg and taking it one handed at about shin height. I still like to remind him of it!
It was one of only 2 catches I remember ever holding on to. The other was in the slips when the ball landed in my hands and I got such a surprise I forgot to appeal. Fortunately the keeper was more alert and he appealed successfully.

When I was about 13 there was a men v women game and I somehow qualified as a man. A bit like pothunter I was surprised to be standing at 1st slip with the ball nestling in my hands having been outside edged by my Mum. Mum didnt walk and the umpire (Dad) had to make the decision !!!
