English sport has a permanent, ingrained and institutional fear of talent IMO. It's not trusted, when in the team it's judged on far harsher terms than the good old solid team grafter is and on top of that is usually coached out of people either at junior level or once they make the first team.
You can see exactly the same traits in our rugby, and football teams over the years as you can see in the cricket team. To be fair it is amazing KP has had the chance to do as much as he has for England.
Then we moan like crazy when our football team can;t pass the ball and hoof it up to the big man up top all the time, our rugby team can;t score tries and the cricket team can only nudge and nurdle away at 2 runs an over.
Bizarre.

KP got out trying play stupid shots.
Cook, Bell got a lot of very good balls. Some players attract them - it always seemed to me Michael Vaughan used to get absolutely unplayable deliveries about every other innings.
The question I ask myself is: On balance is a player got out or have they thrown their wicket away.
For most players, the answer is that they're got out about 50-60% of the time and the rest of the time is their fault (as happens in sport)
KP's percentage of getting himself out is a lot, lot higher. I can't think of many times where the opposition has got him out off the top of my head - yes, sometimes he's made a few runs, but not always.
You add this into the fact that he's not a team player, his ego, lack of diplomacy etc... and it's a picture that's difficult to reconcile.
That's my problem with KP - it's not one thing with him - it's everything.

Would you rather a player got out trying to win or trying not to lose?
Ego is not an issue. I'd argue many of the greatest sportsmen of all time have one. It's often necessary as part of the job. Anyone reckon that Sir Geoffrey or Sir Beefy lacked ego or were diplomats of the highest order? I'd also argue that KP has slowed himself down and changed his game and tempo for the team far more often than more naturally sluggish batsmen have sped theirs up.
Beware of buying in to the perceptions that people want to foist on people rather than examining the evidence.
