Pothunter
My first ball faced was at under 9 level. My dad had drummed into me just to play forward defensive so I did. Ball caught the shoulder of the bat and went over the slips for 4. I scrambled another single and was then bowled ducking out the way of a high full toss. It remained my high score for the rest of that season...

57.5 Degrees of Pain
I'm afraid I have too much time on my hands like most of us at the moment. Feel free to ignore my remeniscences!

Next batting highlight was in 1984. The very dry summer had made our home pitch quite lively, and being high summer a number of regulars were on holiday. Our bowlers had the opposing team out for less than 100, but they had a Scottish schools international fast bowler charging in at one end and a couple of wily old spinners at the other. Our batting duly struggled.

With 9 needed and 3 wickets to fall it was squeaky bum time for us tail enders. I had been promoted to the heady heights of No. 10 because Eric, our tall, gangly young fast bowler making his first appearance in the first XI had no idea with the bat. Wily spinner bowls, our No.8 has a mighty heave, and is caught off a skier with the batsmen crossing, I walk out to the non strikers end. Last ball of the over our No. 9 goes for a big hit and is bowled.

Young fast bowler is still steaming in but I manage to get behind 5 balls and glance the last one to long leg. Eric might be uncoordinated, but when he got all his moving parts going in the same direction he was quick and we scramble three with him diving in to safety in a tangle of bat and pads.

Surveying wily spinner's field, he has the other wily spinner at mid-off, and his best days in the field were clearly some years before. With my extremely limited repertoire of scoring shots this is one place I can try. First ball I attempt to hit straight through the line, mistime it and the ball lobs up towards mid-off. Every other fielder would have stepped forward a couple of paces and taken a dolly but the old chap (doubtless younger than I am now) moves too slowly and it drops in front of him and skips past. Once again Eric runs quickly and gets back to the danger end for two.

Rather than replace mid-off, he is moved in a couple of paces. This time I middle the shot, over his head and over the boundary for four. Cue celebrations and amazement that the club's second worst batsman had avoided having the worst face a ball, while getting the required runs. It won me the club's Batting Highlight prize for the year too, which remained a standing joke for the rest of my time there.

I cannot recall exact details, but many years ago a guy from NZ pitched up and had played some cricket and so made his debut in the 2nd XI to see if he was any good.

I think he came on to bowl about 2nd change and turrned out to be decent and the opposition were skittled for c130.

The new guy opened the batting with my Dad and they knocked the runs off without loss of a wicket. My Dad was single figures not out :-O
