Our 1st XI skipper was due to become bedadded and whilst he waiting the little fella's arrival, turned out for us in the 2nd XI as we had a home fixture. Impending fatherhood had rather affected his form and he came in off the back of a pair of ducks. I am at the other end, non-striker. In those days, 2nd XI cricket had players as umpires. Approximately third ball, he is pinned in front, to all intents and purposes absolutely plum. Huge appeal. Not out says our ump. Me - under my breath - fuck me, Rouser, why wasn't that out? Because he is going to win the game for us... And he did!
