Never mind "The Hundred", six a side matches were only 30 balls. These modern "inventions" of scoops and ramps have got nothing on the stuff we used to play nearly 40 years ago :-)

57.5 Degrees of Pain
We played a lot of 20 over evening games in the 80s, little thinking that in 35 years it would be the dominant form of the game.

In Glasgow May, June and July games had lots of daylight (and both 83 and 84 had balmy weather) but at the end of the season I've fielded on the boundary, unable to see anything but vague shapes in the gloaming*.

I played in the Nottingham Evening League from about 1980. 15 x 8 ball overs. Often reduced to 13 or 12 overs at the toss if the weather was murky. I "fondly" remember standing in the field, hearing a ball being hit and waiting to be shouted if it was coming my way :-)

57.5 Degrees of Pain
In summer 1984 we had a weekend 'tour' to Fort Augustus at the South end of Loch Ness. Still probably the most beautiful setting I've played in. Format was Friday drinking, Saturday competitive game, Saturday proper drinking, Sunday fun game.

One facet of the Sunday game was reversing the batting order so tail end charlies like myself could get a bat. We bat first, I pad up at 4 still the worse for drink, and stretch out for a sleep. Get woken at the fall of the second wicket and hurry out minus a box. A few balls pass and an in-cutter scores a direct hit on the jewelry. I don't remember much of the immediate aftermath but apparently I crawled back to the boundary, still clutching my bat, with huge mirth taking over the rest of the players.

Fortunately no long term harm was done, think I resumed later with protection in place.

Quite funny for me... after 35 years anyway.

In the early 90's, I played cricket with Ian Ward. No, not that one, he never played for Nuthall. The other Ian Ward got hit in the plums against West Indian Caribs. Split his box clean in two. He was helped from the crease and lay in the changing room with a towel over his head. We were batting first, but he was still prone when we had eaten tea, bowled, showered, had a pint and ready to leave.

I have a medical question. How did the Towel on his head help?

Good question Wrigglers. I've always assumed it was so he couldn't see who was laughing the loudest?

I used to place a towel over my head when sleeping in the changing room. Wake me up when it is my turn to bat. Largely this was due to being a nights worker but hangovers were also a thing. Incidentally I once got sunburnt on nights...

(I fell asleep next to the window. It was open to provide what was, at 8am, a cool draft. By lunchtime, there was a sizzling... leg!!!)
