Lovely story Bazoaxe, two for the price of one. In my first year in sixth form i played for the second XI. We trained (ie one net a week) separately from the first team, and seldom played the same opposition school. As a consequence they didn't really know much about us as cricketers. We batted first, Tony Kimber took his left-handed guard, and the fearsome quick came in to bowl. As he reached the delivery stride Tony switched to his normal right-handed stance and glanced the ball through what would have been second slip for four. We got hammered, but i'll never forget the look on their faces as to what had just happened. |

Enjoying your stories all TRO think we need to hear it. It seems West Indians are characters everywhere and Bristol West Indies didn't disappoint... one such game amongst many... Our skipper liked to field at cover and was a good fielder with decent hands. Relatively early in their innings, post tea, the ball is hammered towards him at a presentable height. He spills the 'chance'. Somewhat ruefully he wrings his hands. From the West Indies team comes a lone shout of, 'if you is playin with fire, you gonna get burnt' |

@OtG and lone shouts. Taunton in the seventies. JPL game: can't remember who it was against, but Somerset batsmen at the crease. Bowler appeals extravagantly for something ridiculous. Lone and very loud cry from the crowd in a strong Somerset accent: "If your arse was as big as your mouth, your brains would have dropped out long ago!". |

I can remember sitting on old wooded benches at the back of a long refurbished stand at Trent Bridge, very early 70's, with my Dad and two brothers, watching Notts play, can't remember who against. I can remember the Notts opening bowler starting with an offside wide. An old fella in front of us shook his head and tutted. Next ball, another wide, another tut. Same again for ball three. Fourth ball, he overcompensated and bowled a leg stump half volley which was clipped to the square leg boundary for four. The old fella stood up, shouted "Stick to tha bloody wides" and walked to the bar.

To show the quality of my cricket, here is my entry in the 1972 Wisden - i am C Robson. Note that i played as a batsman, or more reasonably, a fielder. The criteria for appearing was to have scored over 100 runs in the season. I did however hold a record for all of the public schools for that year, can you guess what it is? |

Entry in Wisden - wow! That's something to cherish - as I suspect you do! All I can claim is that I was listed among the prizewinners one year in the Playfair annual - you probably remember they used to set a cricket quiz in the pre-internet days and I won a copy of the Wisden book of cricketing obituaries! |
