So... it seems that this international cricket thingie that you lot seem so keen on is more complicated than I thought. There appears to be a transfer system like in feetball. So that nice Mr Harmer could be bought by England in the 20/21 transfer window? Wonder why South Africa are selling him? |

Meanwhile, in Taunton, the umpires have called it a day. Any slim chance Somerset might have had has been washed away, I suspect.

Bairstow has been dropped from the test squad! Looks like Pope is the spare keeper. bbc.co.uk |

I think that's fair enough based on performance. Weight of runs for Sibley. Crawley also has over 800. Not sure what either Mahmood or Parkinson have done to deserve a call up, but 21 and 22 wickets doesn't seem a lot. Pleased to see Banton in the T20 squad, he can't play spin (exaggerates) but he can certainly take the quicks apart!

Mahmood was our top bowler in the u-19 world cup in 2016 and then selected for England Lions, so he's been on the test team track for a while. Parkinson likewise was in the England Lions team. Assume, given their age, they're mostly along for the experience. I wrote about Sibley & Crawley on here a few days ago, their call-up seems a pretty sensible move. Suspect Bairstow (who is in the T20 but not test squad) needs a bit of time off. |

Ok... I get that but it feels a bit like, well, you went to Eton, you'll do for prime minister... selection should be based on performance rather than potential in the main. Agree they are there for experience but Parkinson is an odd one. If you need a back up spinner in NZ, use Root. Not going to be bowling many on seam friendly early season pitches.

I don't buy Bairstow getting back in easily or any time soon. He is playing some much white ball cricket over the next year. He is a batsman who keeps and has failed for well over a year and I don't see where he scores runs in the long form over the next year to justify being picked. Root at 4 and Roy being dropped is an admission they screwed up. A good selection and a good captain could mean England would now be holding the ashes. |

I'm not sure we can read too much into the selection for NZ. It has been positioned as a "development" tour for quite a while.

Not that it seems to matter to anyone, but it's not part of the test championship either. It seems to have been shoehorned in before the SA games in November.

South Africa? Do we too a coin to see who gets Simon Harmer?
