One advantage (only perhaps) of the current county structure is that there are plenty of first class games at the start of the season, even before the tests start in May. Given these are usually played in bowler friendly conditions any Bairstow runs will count for a lot. Will obviously depend on how well the team does without him but there is definitely a way back for him next season if he commits. Even if he goes to the IPL and doesnt play County cricket in the early season, Ed Smith has previously picked Buttler based on IPL runs.

Bairstow will be off playing IPL , it is Buttlers to loose now. It is a good decision. You don't need two keepers in the team. It also allows for curran to get in.
Don't agree with the NZ tests not being important. If you do well. You keep your place.

I think they're ver important - they could shape our "main" test team for years to come.
Hopefully...

I think Somerset's only hope was a big score and forcing us to follow on.
Not gonna happen.

Unusually positive from you on Essex's hopes... I think the forecast is good for the last 2 days and reasonable for today although I live 4 miles up the road and there is a lot of rain on the hills around Taunton. Potentially still 200 plus overs left in the game so more than possible to see a result.
For what it's worth, I actually think that Somerset are just a bit short of championship material this year. The difference that a Matt Renshaw would have made to the top order would have probably tipped the balance.

The point with Bairstow is they think he's good enough to be a specialist when he's on form. When he came back initially as a specialist, he was lights out. He wasn't in the white ball team then though.

Most people backed trying Roy. Sometimes things don't work out and the only reason Roy got a try was other options had failed.

The idea of going with a couple of 'red ball' specialists in Sibley and Pope who like to bat time certainly appeals.

130-8. Not looking good with the 'follow on' game plan.

I think we can save a lot of time by Somerset just declaring now.
