Everybody is hereby banned from saying things are going well for England. We'll have no commentators curses here thank you very much!

16 years of pain is still writ deep in my consciousness!

I'm going to cite Mike Whitney; called up from club cricket in 1981 and he was decidedly average, but went on to be a decent test cricketer.

Please don't be too harsh on Woakes (especially); he's in the side to bat as well as bowl... which still gives him a chance to impress.

Even if he doesn't, plenty of good Test cricketers have inauspicious debuts (GA Gooch, anyone?)

And poor old Gavin Hamilton; 1 Test, 2 innings, no runs, no wickets, no catches. Worst Test career ever...

I note that Strauss on Sky has mooted the possibility of taking Comedy Bopara to Australia. No; he's not Test class, never has been, never will be; that is all.

(I concede he is still a good cricketer and has had some success as a hit and wish biffer)

Fozzy - our eldest can now recite 'York-shire, York-shire, York-shire...' on request as well as 'Come on, Wednesday', although I think she believes the latter is invoking midweek rather than th'mighty Owls...

Not the fault of Woakes.........in the side as 3rd seamer and not up to the task yet. I think we can safely say that we won't see this England team ever again (I hope!). Heading for a steady draw.

Gavin Hamilton did get his one test cap on perhaps the worst pitch in modern test cricket history upon which to bat.

Witness Vaughnie walking out to bat at 2 for 4.

Think that would wreck anyone's confidence. Hamilton was always a better one-day player for Yorkshire anyway.

Chris Silverwood was the best Yerks bowler of that crop anyway...
