I wonder if bubbles will still be allowed? May be a difficult call to my Mum later.

Looking back at the first wave lockdown, it suppressed R to around 0.7. The new strain has been estimated to have an R of +0.4 to +0.7. Whilst estimating R is not as simple as just adding the numbers together, it seems quite possible that it will remain above 1 and so cases will remain at a similar level / increase slowly from where we are now. So we could be looking at weeks of lockdown just to stand still.
Hoping everyone who is vulnerable gets a vaccine as soon as possible.

I think they will Hunkyteddy.
Good news gg.
I really hope they don't introduce mask wearing whilst exercising. My only hope would be disposable ones and I try to avoid using those socially.

Comment on a local site from the head of a private school:
"What about the 1500 people that die every day in the UK from the big three: heart disease, strokes and cancer-related illnesses. Why haven’t we taken these issues as seriously as we have a virus which is likely to end up with a mortality rate of well below 1%, and which, according to the Office for National Statistics has an average age of death in the UK of 83. Meanwhile, in Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city, men have a life expectancy of 71."

Erm because the big 3 aren’t contagious- honestly what is wrong with some people.
Mask wearing is one of my biggest bug bears I am with you MrsJ if you have issues mea I g you can’t wear a mask you should be isolating I don’t believe any other countries allow such flaunting of the rules. Leading to my biggest bug bear no enforcement- what is the point.
A campaign to say you must wear a mask at all times indoors & outdoors if you can’t be 2m (or whatever) apart, zero allowances (or the very extreme but only with a doctor’s latter) and a bow to wear a mask I am sick of the amount of people not wearing them properly including shop assistants. The worst was a NHS worker a few months back full work uniform, badge and no mask her or her partner and making her mouth go - I was tempted to ask where she worked but she was also scary 😬 and I feared I might end off in hospital 😂

You could argue that those things are already taken seriously, with public health campaigns and investment in drugs and medical procedures as well as in research. TBH I don't see it's really very valid to compare chronic conditions with a communicable disease and he'd have been wiser to keep quiet.

Agreed sallykate, the low-hanging fruit of chronic diseases have all been picked. They all have major charities supporting them and the Wellcome Trust etc who also fund research. There are things we could do better at: cancer survival, maternal deaths, still births, mental health, anorexia, suicide etc, but that depends on how much money you're prepared to put into the system.
I bet the head teacher hasn't been up in arms about Glasgow life expectancy any time recently.

Thanks Cheg, I guess last year is an underestimate but the fact it's anywhere near that on current trends is shocking.
