I think early on in the pandemic, communicating all data was absolutely necessary to gain the trust of the public, who were being asked to comply with things they had frankly never imagined before.
I was really impressed with some of the response from the public, who seemed to quickly get ahead of the government in their responses (which wasn't difficult, esp when we were seeing Italy suffering badly and our cases started to track theirs with lag of about 20-30 days)
The government were doing press conferences so explanations for the measures being taken could be clearly communicated by scientists. It felt like a coordinated, rational response from nearly everyone.
That all feels a very long time ago. It's quite clear that a huge proportion of the population have now lost patience, many of them don't trust this government and the abject (possibly deliberate?) lack of a clear plan going forward means many are questioning where we're even going.

We lost the opportunity to get to Zero Covid in summer last year - with <1000 cases a day and c 100,000 tests a day you would have thought that was a manageable level from which to get to negligible cases with highly targeted efforts - local lockdowns, border controls, quarantines etc. Instead of which "we" spaffed it and look where we are - lab rats for a bunch of Ayn Rand sociopaths.

I couldn’t understand the thought behind eat out to help out we avoided gaping anywhere on the ‘special days’
I think more clear data in case numbers a % of positives against testing would be useful while data is available few will look for it the reliance is largely on media. I wouldn’t like to be making the decisions on what to do. Seems whatever is done it will be wrong.

To me, it seems that whatever you do is going to backfire! The Netherlands closed the borders to keep out the Delta variant, which is now rampaging through the population 🙄 Meh! I had hoped to see my sister this week, but thankfully, we decided to postpone it till later this summer.

Just catching up - with regards to testing, when my wife and I were both ill last year, neither of us was tested as we stayed at home (back then, most of the people going into hospital were coming out in body bags, so my wife was absolutely adamant that we'd stay home as long as we could). We had covid confirmed much later with antibody tests.
Since we weren't hospitalised, we were labelled as "mild" covid. Let me say again that it was anything but mild - I'm immunocompromised, yet have never been anywhere near as sick as I was then. The phrase "mild covid" is incredibly misleading.
WRT positivity rates, they're way more useful if you know what the testing criteria are - since most of the current testing is being done on people who are symptomatic (or are likely yo have had close contact with those that are), we're likely to see a higher positivity rate than with a random sampling of the population.
Some of you will be aware of the way that long covid has destroyed my life - to the extent that I recently tried to end it. Unfortunately, there are sanctimonious meddlers that decided that rather than being allowed to solve all of my problems with a straightforward solution, they'd rather force me to continue to suffer - but wouldn't offer me any help or solutions. "You have to learn to live with it", they say. "Why?" is my unanswered question.
There is NO help, NO treatment, NO support. Nothing. Just pain and misery.
To those who want to open everything up now, then I say good luck. If I were a better person, then I wouldn't wish long covid on any of them. But I'm not a better person - and if the last few months have taught me anything, it's taught me that most people aren't.

Andy, so horrible, and terribly sorry for the plight you find yourself in. Please hang in there. Really hoping their are long covid treatments and cures coming. There are definitely people working hard on it. Take care, G

BK brighter days ahead
after over a year of phone calls with my GP where I would go through the symptoms and issues I have had since a possible Covid visitation only to be advised to take various things ranging from antihistamine, antibiotics and bottles of Gaviscon I finally had a face to face consultation. Under Statement of the year - ooh that’s not right, I’ve never seen anything like that before. Don’t know what to do! Then given an urgent appointment with ENT.
