The thing is fopp you have to have some evidence to back up your claim that they don't work. On a scale from zero effectiveness (which makes no sense as they clearly and obviously slow down particles escaping from your mouth and nose) to the absolute prevention to Covid (which is obvious also because masked Pepe have caught the virus), there is a point in between where reality sits. Denying that does make you a denier as it's a rationally ludicrous position to take.

Unless you fear there is some great commercial overlord that nations of the world are bending to as they force these valuable commodities on our faces.

Ultracat - I went four months without going in a shop from July because I respect my fellow humans despite thinking they have all gone crazy. I haven't been in a shop without a mask on but it burns the inside of brain doing it.

I don't think not wearing a mask is doing harm but this takes the conversation into a very much deeper place.

I'm out anyway. Unfortunately for you, you have to wear a mask. Suck it up and "crack on with it".

I haven't seen any evidence on here to indicate that Fopp is a COVID denier.

My personal experience of wearing masks in the workplace has meant no Covid transmission between staff members and no staff member catching Covid from symptomatic Covid patients that we have been treating for cancer

We're all different. I have never used sanitiser except at shop entrances. I don't wash my hands all the time. I don't wash groceries etc. I have never worried about passing-by people, going into cafes etc (when open). Doesn't mean I am a Covid denier either.

"I don't think not wearing a mask is doing harm"

If you've got covid and by not wearing a mask infect 10 other people rather than 9 other people if you had worn a mask, then you have 'done harm' surely?

The pandemic is a numbers game, that's why people are told to wear masks.

I dont like wearing a mask but I do and I will. I havent caught covid and intuitively other than being uncomfortable and causing glasses steam up masks feel to me like part of the strategy to manage the virus. 100% effective ? I doubt it, but have they an impact, yes.

I think of it a bit like Sky cycling's marginal gains: every little bit counts. If my wearing a mask prevents me infecting someone else who might then go on to infect 20 others I'll do it.

That said, I am definitely in the category hating to wear them and would struggle if I was expected to wear one all day, every day, as some of my friends have to.

Social distancing and avoiding prolonged contact with others in an indoor setting remain the primary effective measures against this thing. Where we can't avoid that then additional precautions are sensible.

Tim, I'm with you I think - I wash my hands thoroughly if I've been out (especially on public transport) but remain unconvinced of fomites as a significant vector of transmission so have never quarantined post or washed shopping.

I'm lucky to have been relatively unaffected by this (despite living in London). Seeing my husband upset yesterday at a friend's news of his son's death at the age of 26 from Covid reminded me this is still something to be taken very seriously.

I made up my mind on masks when I saw a compelling stat from America, which stated that states where masks were not mandatory had higher infection rates.
Plus the fact that every health professional I have ever heard has said that they should be worn.
