I'm thinking about of marking the pre-join activities of new joiners activities as expired - to avoid the problem that Fetch describes.

Conquercise does depend a lot on where you are and who else also is playing and you really don't have much control over that. If I run out in the US I can run through a square and I instantly own that square, so on a work trip out there (pre-Covid) I could increase my ownership by 20 to 30 with a reasonably conservative week's running.
My home grid square is next to a sports centre and there are a few local fetchies who run from there most days so there are adjacent squares to my home square where I am hundreds behind the leaders. There are some fetch games such as hide and seek and who squares wins where the location gets normalised but for conquercise you really have no control so if new joiners are added or not it is somewhat irrelevant.
On the other hand, I just got my grid up to 5. 6 seems a lot more work and I really like the Chilterns AONB to the west more than Slough to the east so 5 may be my limit.

The maths is quite simple, so for a grid of size n, you need (2n+1)^2 squares.
The 6 grid is 13x13 (169) and the 7 grid 15x15 (225) so an extra 56 squares.
I expect the reality is a lot harder as those 56 squares are all along the edge of your existing grid (plus 4 new corners).

Subject as always to my ability to use my database correctly, I have 5039 contiguous zones out of 6411 total - the total is as of today, the contiguous is from Jan 1st so must now be 5048.
There will probably be some significant joining of distant clumps of zones to my big clump of zones this year.

Chris, what are your lawn and grid numbers? Both lawn and grid only apply to the last 365 days.
Where are your disconnected clumps? Your map seems to show pretty much all of the south east plus the coast and canals across the country.
