ChrisHB, I agree a diagonal line is good in yielding a high number of squares but sometimes a carefully constructed loop is even better: always worth nicking into the corner of a square.

Depending on how far north you are I suspect the best is to go due E or W just next to the top/bottom of the zone and make little excursions to the N or S. That's what I sometimes did when cqing London, as there are enough streets.

I also think the optimal solution is latitude dependant. Here in NZ (about the same latitude as central Spain) zones are quite square. Zones are a bit narrower in the UK, and even narrower at higher latitudes. I concluded in Stockholm that a predominantly E-W run was going to get me more zones.

I believe we've previously established you could get 18,000 zones in a very short run (if you go far enough north or south)
