Thanks! I have some more complex Wordpress books available on one coding site that I might check out too.

Hi coder / developers, can I ask a question, not passing business to anyone, I don't think? :-(

I need to create a website for a business, taking bookings for sessions, and eventually taking payment. Is Word Press still my friend?

I'm happy to fiddle bits of HTML but don't want to code from scratch and certainly can't build a booking capability. Also, my design and artistic skills are very weak!

So is this right?:

Word Press template + bookings module (and later a payments module)
Add/replace my own pics and words

Where should I buy the domain? Is buying from WordPress OK? Any disadvantage? Domain seems to be available - happygosailing.co.uk !

Thanks dev / coder pals. :-) G

I've never used WP, but I haven't heard that it's been usurped by any other system. And even if it has, it undoubtedly does all the stuff you need.

In terms of buying a domain, maybe check what the price is after the first year. They often do a good rate to get you in. And consider alternative suffixes to .com e.g. .co.uk, or .biz, or something like that. May well be cheaper, although the trade off is that people often assume it's .com. Oh, and check whether there are other sites that occupy the other suffixes. If the business takes off, it might be a hassle to buy the alternative suffixes.

Don't know about wordpress, but every youtuber out there seems to get sponsorship from squarespace... I steer well clear of anything user-facing, so no idea how good any of the options are though.

hi @HappyG(rrr), WordPress just keeps going, a bit like an old runner really. A big ecosystem so yes, add booking and payments modules (plugins) as you need. All depends how confident you are to do all yourself or with help. As Fetch says, be wary of promo prices for domain and/or hosting that jump after first year and lock you in. Think about email with that domain as well. And yes I do all of this, my own limited company for IT business services inc. WordPress. Drop me an fmail or pick up on here.

Oh one thing. You might want to buy your domain separately from any hosting, so easier to switch if not satisfied. I the past I used/recommended gandi.net but they're prices are not so good now. For my own business I use https://www.netim.com/en. Both French companies as it happens.

Thanks Fetch, Sam and ER.

I have bought domains in the past from nominet, Heart Internet etc. Happy to manage them separately if that is best. Yes, happygosailing.com and .co.uk are both available, so I might buy both of those and just point .co.uk to .com. I expect only ever to be UK based (mind you, we are always talking about moving out to New Zealand. And would be great fun to arrange holidays to Mediterranean for customers in the future!)

I'll go with WordPress. Like I say, I can noodle a bit of HTML here and there, but not keen to create or manage whole site and using a template as a design will be essential, cos I'm not great at the arty side!

Excited! Will def lean on you folks for more help. :-) G

My ds2 is a big geek and he recommended Squarespace as being easy to use for commerce. I used to use Wordpress just for blogging and it was easy to use though, I have no coding skills whatsoever. I'm sure ChattyG can help suggest any coding you need though!

Thanks fleecy.

Very frustrated with WP already and I've barely started. Do I need Personal, Premium, Business, Commerce or higher plans to install a booking plugin? WP Booking plugin support says Personal or Premium fine for bookings, Business if you want to take payments for bookings. Makes sense.

WP support (well, and AI chatbot) says "The Personal and Premium plans do not support the installation of third-party plugins."

Grrr.

About This Thread

Maintained by fetcheveryone
Every now and then I get an email from someone asking if I can quote for making/updating their websites. On the last two occasions these have been WordPress sites. I've never had much more than a play with WP, plus I don't generally have any spare time. So I'm wondering if there are any WP specialists that I could point people at. If this is you, leave some details here :-) Or even if you code in other languages / other platforms, it'd be interesting to see who does what :-)
