I have taken part in races that route through church grounds and cemeteries, as long as you don’t trample over graves and are respectful of visiting mourners I don’t see an issue.

AM not sure about it but our club has a session that runs to a cemetery gate - known as cemetery hills.
If anyone does stop you or say something why not reply that you are just trying to get fit and avoid moving in there as a more permanent resident!

Quite often there will be a notice at the entrance to a cemetery giving details of whoever is the 'administration' point of contact. You could perhaps give them a call and enquire about public access - eg can people who are not there to visit a grave/attend a funeral use the paths to go through the cemetery? I imagine they are all different. We have a local race that advertises itself as 'Running into the Graveyard' but it is held in the grounds/graveyard of a local church to raise money for the church once a year. I don't know if they encourage runners in there for the rest of the year.

Anything preventing the runner going around the cemetery? Doubt is thus removed.

I run through a cemetery near me all the time but the main cemetery for my area doesn’t (as far as I know) have a footpath in it so I don’t run in there. Can you get through the cemetery from one end to another? If so I’d say it wasn’t a problem.

Just back from a run during which I ran right through the middle of a cemetery. It's in a rural setting on the edge of a village - I guess it must have been created as an overflow/extension at some point, as it's a good distance from the church. There's a clearly identified public footpath, so I feel quite relaxed about this.
I don't think I would run through one if there was no public right of way.

When training for our Boys' Brigade cross country competition (which we won by the way), we trained by running via the footpath that goes down the middle of Croydon Crematorium (and cemetery). A bit eerie during those evenings but we didn't mind.
I recently looked at rerouting a race I organise but felt that running along a path that fell just inside a cemetery might not go down well with all the runners. That, some excess foliage and uneven ground put me off the idea.

Whenever I've run through a cemetery I've had to fight the overwhelming temptation to stop running and read the inscriptions on the gravestones instead.

No problem with running through a cemetery but I would avoid it if a burial was taking place. If i blundered into a funeral I would stop running and walk away by the shortest route.
