Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Do any of you have a dog/dogs as well as cats? We're making enquiries about getting a puppy, but OH's main objection is that the cat won't like it - he (OH) is ok with cost/mess/walks etc but doesn't want to upset the cat. I understand, but think the benefits probably outweigh this, and TBH just breathing upsets the cat.

Wrong audience I suspect but I'm interested.

I have been told that as long as you get a puppy, the cat will adapt and find it something to boss about/lord over. Better a dog than another cat! Cats are solitary and the house would be devided up between them with awkward scenes where they are fed. They would need their own litter tray or the piss and poo all over the house to make a point and often, if you have a cat flap, when one is in the other is out. A dog however will happily submit to the cat, if it is a pup. The cat will then use it for warmth, to help fight off other cats etc.

Growing up, we always had both so sometimes a puppy came into a household which already had an adult cat (or cats). I don't remember any issues at all - though we were in the middle of the countryside so both animals spent a fair bit of time outside.

Im hopeful that Napoleon would assert himself over a puppy. I had to take him to the vet recently and while waiting in the car park a puppy came very close to his carrier (just being inquisitive) and Napoleon hissed and would have walloped the dog on the nose but contact was prevented by the sides of the carrier. The puppy hastily retreated!
