Advice for officers & staff during the current heatwave
Due to the current heatwave we are experiencing please read the following advice and guidance:
It is important to remember that there are elementary precautions we can all take when working in hot weather, especially those officers who wear uniform and body armour.
In hot weather, or after physical exertion, the body temperature of an officer wearing armour may increase.
Officers should be aware of the effects of dehydration and heat exhaustion. Every effort should be made to minimise the effects of either condition. This may include consuming extra fluids on hot days.
Officers and staff involved in the care and working of police dogs should consider making dynamic risk assessments in relation to their welfare in hot weather.

Top tips to prevent heat-related illnesses
Keep hydrated. Drink regularly even if you don't feel thirsty – water, milk or fruit juices are best.
Try to avoid alcohol, tea and coffee as they can make you feel more dehydrated.
Try to eat normally. Try more cold foods such as salad and fruit as they contain more water.
When out in the sun, use appropriate protection factor lotion/cream on exposed parts of your body.
You can prevent heat-related illnesses. The important thing is to stay well hydrated, to make sure that your body can get rid of extra heat and to be sensible about exertion in hot and humid weather.

I don't know how the police cope being out in this weather with all their gubbins on. I wore a sleeveless top in an air conditioned office today, and wilted for my hour's lunchtime walk.

I think as official advice goes the two notices we had appear on the intranet were pretty good, in fairness.
Agree with Q about body armour and appointments and whatnot.

[Avoid tea and coffee - thought that had been thoroughly debunked by now. And fruit juices made the devil.]
I wouldnae fancy trying to walk in the body armour either, mind; let alone chase someone. Bootees for polis dugs!
