Gutted. Was going to be my last uk race before emigrating. Don't think I'll bother going to pick the top up, doesn't feel right to have the top when I've not done the race. Will have to try and get out for a run of some kind tomorrow instead.

I'm going to pick up the top for The Race That Never Was. Might as well. If anyone outside York wants me to try to pick up on their behalf, fmail me today, sort out details and I can ask the organisers. They do say in the original rules that you have to present the number, but I don't see why it can't be crossed off a list? Anyway, if anyone wants to give it a go, get in touch. Looks as though they're not re-scheduling or anything... :-(

I have asked whether there will be free entries or at least a reduced entry fee for next year on twitter. I had the reply that it is still be be discussed.

I know a lot of the costs will have been paid out but surely each year the race makes a profit and so this year they should take the hit and refund people. Potentially they have had approx £45k from entry fees, and im assuming they would make at least a £5k profit out of it so I can't see no reason why we couldnt at least get £5 each off next years entry or as a gesture of goodwill refund everyone as most run this annually anyway.

Or on the other hand that £5k profit (assuming they DO make a profit) might be fully committed - clubhouse rental, insurance, juniors subsidy etc .....

theyre still offering the memento, which is usually pretty good, i still use my bag from years ago. dont think refunds are realistic, its a shame but it happens. Great wee race, im sure they didnt do that lightly

But if it covers other club costs then entries are subsiding the annual membership of their runners. Im not saying thats right or wrong but would say its not fantastic to have to rely on the income generated from one race.

Maybe its all just the risk of entering a race thats in January and maybe im a tight Yorkshireman! ;)

Lots of local clubs use their races to help fund the club for the year. It helps keep subs lower and make the club accessible to all. If we didnt make a small profit from our club race we'd have to increase subs to meet the additional costs. Its not that the race is subsidising the club it's just that it makes the subs more affordable for all members (and potential members!)
