I've read all but the most recent Dublin Murder Squad; they're all good, and one of the things I like is that minor characters in one regularly get extended in the next - nobody is just a real dick, they have reasons for being the way they are and eventually those get explained.

But it's best if you forget that trick... and let it dawn on you as you read each successive book don't you think? Mind you, reviews and blurbs give it away rather.

I think the best way to approach them would be to binge-read the lot while putting that technique out of your mind. In practice, reading them as they go into paperback has meant I went back and reread the previous book each time to make the development/exposition of characters as clear as possible to myself.

Sharkie, I was certainly in my teens but can't remember exactly where in my teens.
I've read Jude but can't call it to mind. That should be next after The Tenant, then, perhaps.
Loved that poem, Dio.

Not a literary comment: I remember enjoying Lucky Jim when I read it years ago, but it was immediately spoilt backwards when I read Take a Girl Like You straight afterwards. I don't give a fuck if it was the sixties, drug rape as a romantic centrepiece is toxic shit. Not read any Kingsley Amis since. Should I?

Thank you. I'm constantly baffled by apologists of things like this who shrug and say 'different era, different values'. I'm trying hard not to mention my feeling that BTOOT was misogynist but it seems I inadvertently just did.

I don't think btoot was misogynistic just small town/island. Philip Roth now - sabbaths theatre was proper misogynistic but I still loved it.
