And, after checking out the sidebar, the next thing I read is this from EP on the Mundane thread: “Chased Dio out of spare room with Dyson”.

Our holiday villa had quite a well-stocked bookshelf. I studied it intently hoping to find something I really wanted to read. I drew a blank, but then I spotted this name and a familiar pair of eyes.
Maybe I would read another Dan Brown to see if it was any better or worse than The Da Vinci Code.
Disaster - it was in Dutch. Even if I could read Dutch, I wouldn't be able to judge the quality of the work as I wouldn't know if it was inherently better written or had a good translator.
I read Village News, by Tom Fort which was interesting in parts, but slightly disappointing as it tailed off and got quite dull by the end.

After a false start many years ago I have returned to The Goldfinch, by Donna Tartt, and very glad I am that I have.

I have, and I employing the dual audiobook and paperback approach that maximises available reading time. This only happens for the best books (or where I already have a physical copy).

I've finished Bournville, will review a bit later.
I'm now reading a weird book set in East Africa, possibly Sudan in the 50s. Someone is telling the story of their life but he honestly sounds like a complete psychopath He's currently in London seducing women and driving them to suicide. So, a really cheerful read! Luckily it's under 200 pages so I won't have too long to put up with it.

That rings a bell. What is it?
I loved The Goldfinch and was prepared to hate it.

Only got about a quarter way into The Goldfinch before starting skipping. Have history of mixed fortunes/feelings re Ms Tartt.
Coincidentally Raffo has just plucked it form my might-throw-out-pile.

I loved The Goldfinch and found it a much easier read the Secret History. But often with thick novels there will be a stodgy section to persevere through.
