Good point, McG. Better written than anything JKR ever wrote, though. At least anything I read. Although Oxford *is* quite Hogwartsy, btw. Fun fact: they live in Magpie Lane. As did I, 1989-90

Yes, JKR was probably plagiarising Oxford and Cambridge Sounds like I hated the book.... but once I got reading I whizzed through. It's just I'd keep coming up against things that made me roll my eyes. and welcome back to the world of reading Hann. |

Interesting that you flew along Watling Street McG. I have to say I'm finding it quite a trudge and I still have a good third to go.

I am making my way through the audiobook of Anna Karenina. I'm still enjoying it but I still have 30 hours and 6 minutes left to go, I'm only about a quarter of the way through so far. I think I shall have to turn up the speed.

I think sometimes I can get so wrapped up in a book I leave some of my critical faculties behind. I can see, in retrospect, that LindsD and McGoohan have perfectly valid points about Babel, but I adored it whilst I was inside it. I am the kind of person who can watch very old episodes of Doctor Who and not notice any wobbly scenery or rubbery monsters because I get so involved.

I'm a bit like that, I have to say. I'm still glad I read it and have bought it as a present for my nephew who is interested in language.

If you go back through the individual book threads, you'll see me saying 'I LOVED it' and then McG saying 'but the women were all really poorly written' or 'all the characters were one-dimensional' and I'll say 'oh yeah....'
