I might just try that... I feel I should stick up for Thomas Penman - I like the writing style and am finding the Thomas character funny - the scene in which he tries to elicit information from his sister by pretending he knows more than he does is excellent - the chapters are also nicely self-contained, making it quite inviting to pick up again

Or plump straight for the hard stuff and go for Bleak House, which is wonderful in its own way. (It's not hard really - thinking cinematically sort of helps))
