I enjoyed Little Dorrit. But you do have to adjust your mindset.

McGoohan - I saw what you did there
I just can't get excited at the prospect of Dickens is Christmas Carol quite short? I might just try that...
I feel I should stick up for Thomas Penman - I like the writing style and am finding the Thomas character funny - the scene in which he tries to elicit information from his sister by pretending he knows more than he does is excellent - the chapters are also nicely self-contained, making it quite inviting to pick up again

Pickwick Papers is an unutterable plod.
I would try David Copperfield or Great Expectations as a taster - Great Expectations edges it.
Or plump straight for the hard stuff and go for Bleak House, which is wonderful in its own way. (It's not hard really - thinking cinematically sort of helps))

The Big Sleep is brilliant, everything a pulp-fiction detective novel should be. Hawthorn & Child is different, but I loved it. Parts of it are outstanding.

Does someone talented want to append the new bonus book to my September selection? Not that we want anyone noticing...

The Big Sleep is a book I've re-read almost every year since I was nineteen, which is a lot of readings. Yes, I do almost know it by heart.
