Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

It's confirmed he quit at Dunmail - leg spasm and knee pain cited as the reason.

Gutted for him, he's a really nice chap and put a lot of work into the attempt.

Yeah, he’s out. Injured.

Such a shame after all the effort over the last few months and getting out such a good support team.

Wonder if he recovers quickly if he’ll have another go in a few weeks.

I saw that too, looks like a hell of challenge. I've driven through Vermont and it's just mile after mile of mountainous forest, you can get seriously lost there if you have a mind.

Have you read Scott Jurek’s book ‘North’ about his Appalachian Trail adventure, NE?

Yes I have. A couple of adventurous (American) friends of mine took a sabbatical from work and hiked the Appalachian Trail, their stories gave me nightmares ..... seriously, would you go anywhere near a bear?

Scott's book was interesting. Ironic that the park authorities tried to fine him for spilling champagne on the hallowed ground at the finish!

I did most of the AT last year. Only minor problems with bears. And snakes.

It very well signposted, so the chances of getting lost are pretty slim.

It's been a bit of a bucket list/post-retirement dream of mine to do the AT for many years, although as the opportunity gets closer, I don't really think it's ever going to happen. (Even though Dr S has given the concept her blessing!) I don't suppose you have a blog or report of the experience anywhere, Pou Pou?

Sorry no, I don't.

But there are lots of great AT travelogues on YouTube.
I was 58 when I started - there were plenty of people over 60 on trail. It was a great experience, although if I were to do it again, I might choose the PCT.

GTN video on their Frog Graham attempt, worth watching just for the smile factor. If Heather seems familar, that's Heather Fell who took silver at the Modern Pentathlon in the 2012 Olympics. She moved to triathlon shortly afterwards.
