Can someone help me out on cassettes please?
I've got a Cube Peloton Race that must be about 5 or 6 years old now which has got a 105 groupset all round. At some point in the past I replaced the cassette with an Ultegra CS-6700-10 11-28T.
I've not ridden it for a couple of years but I'm having heel problems again which has put paid to my running so I got the bike out again and have been upping the mileage. I've never found hills easy but watching some Youtube videos I've realised that for steeper climbs people seem to be using at least 32 teeth on the back.
I looked in the Ultegra cassette box that was sitting on the shelf and sure enough there's a CS-HG62-10 11-32T in there which at first I presumed was the one I took off the Cube. But searching for the part no. online it looks like it's a mountain bike cassette.
I'm guessing that the reason I changed the cassette in the first place was that I needed a new cassette to put on a spare wheel when I bought a turbo. If I look at that wheel it's got a CS-HG500-10 11-32T but that looks like it's from the Tiagra range which seems odd when the rest of the groupset is 105.
After all that rambling I finally get to the question itself which is, of the available cassettes which is the best one to use?
And then I'll ask a supplemental question which is, can I go bigger than a 32T? What's the biggest that my 105 rear mech can cope with (I've no idea whether it's medium or long cage, it's about 86mm between jockey wheel centres)?

Molesy, that's a good question. You really do need to find out what kind of cage is on your 105 rear mech before you plan a bigger cassette, though I suspect that if you put an Ultegra 6700 11 - 28 cassette on there at some point and based on your 86mm between centres, the chances are it's a medium cage and therefore I * think * the biggest cog you're going to get on there is a 30 and even then you'll have to do a bit of faffing with the B screw to make sure it doesn't hit the upper jockey wheel, I've seen people do this before and it's tight. Of course, if your rear mech is a long cage then the case is altered - I think you're looking at a 34 max size.

On the basis that it was the one in the box I put the HG62 back on and although I've not tried it on the road yet it seems to index without any problems on the trainer.

NE has covered a lot of it. This table may be of use to you https://www.cyclecycle.info/bicycle-compatibility-charts/shimano-rear-derailleurs.
To answer your second question first, you can't officially go more than 32 with any Shimano road derailleurs. You may possibly squeeze a 34 on, but it could be a challenge.
From your description, I think you'll have either a 5700 ss (short cage) or 5701 GS (medium cage). With the latter fitting the 32 should be fine. With the former, as described above, you'd technically be out of range and it may be tricky to set up. You may also need to check what chainrings you have at the front, to ensure the capacity is sufficient to get into all gears.

What is the advantage of a short cage, as opposed to a medium or long?
I have a 11-28 waiting to replace a 12-25 - when I work up the nerve to try. So far, I can't even get the chain into the splitter.

I have used a 32 with my short cage derailleur on my solo bike for ages, with no problems! I run a compact 50/34 with it (Cumbria - steep and hilly! - have never been under-geared for faster stuff!)

And you can go bigger than the 32 on a medium cage. I have a 11-36 on the Tandem which has a 105 11 speed medium cage derailleur
Shimano don't do that size on a road cassette - but Sunrace do.
Technically it is outside of the range - but it works seamlessly.... Actually it *did*.... we've worn it out and I'm struggling to get a replacement at the moment and have an 11-28 on that I had hanging around........ in my Box Of Useful Bits!!

Interesting. A bit of googling reveals that I've got a 5701 GS rear mech so medium cage.
Looking around online it's looking harder to buy 10 speed bits. Presumably if I wanted to go 11 speed I'd need to replace everything from the shifters back? Potentially better off getting a new bike.

Interesting thread guys, sorry for misleading you on the medium cage - I contacted the guy I had in mind last night and indeed he is running a 5701 medium and an 11 - 32.
I'm intrigued by the cassette sizes that eB is running on his bike, I genuinely thought that wasn't possible on a short cage. Did it take much faffing to set it up?
Molesey - yes, if you want to go 11 speed it's the whole thing from shifters back, I have just been through this experience.... and as you say, 10 speed parts are getting harder to find, decent shifters go for unexpectedly big money on Ebay.
