I'm quite slow on the bike and it can easily take me a while to crawl past someone if I'm only going marginally faster than them. I was really worried in my first triathlon a couple of weeks ago so made sure I was never riding directly behind anyone else unless they were quite a distance away, but this did put me quite a way off the racing line.
