Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

That's disappointing, JB :( And, I hope, an unusual experience.

missed the R4 programme - probably watching the *Desrt Rats* with J Jnr - he has a thing for black & white films: R4 are very good with programmes about ASD - Joe repeats himself; he also copies the behaviour of other children in his class - I think this is because he struggles to find a calming mechanisim.

And yes we shouldn't be trying change the children - we shouldbe spending time helping them understand the world they are in - although there are some things that go right over Joe's head:.

Interesting point there, Helegant. I didn't hear the broadcast and don't know what angle the speaker was coming from, but ... try to change these children or not? Accept them as they are, knowing that they can't be guaranteed that acceptance everywhere they go, or try to help them become more "ordinary" because it'll give them an easier passage through life?

I shuddered a bit when a teacher told me proudly that she and some of the more approved-of children in the class had managed to make my oldest daughter, then aged about five, "more like the other little girls". This was before the lass was diagnosed as having Asperger syndrome. But over the years, my daughter chose to put a great deal of effort into training out her own autistic traits.

I don't think thats bad V'rap - but it much come with alot of support, I've found with Joe that he's improved with age - you seem to have a few more little victories as time passes.

The education system is harsh and often adds to children with ASD......

I will NEVER forget being told big birds was the worst behaved child the ed psych had ever seen..... or the arguing with a headmaster as my son who was 8-9 at the time had been left in a classroom on his own, whilst others were out at play .... (prior to that he'd been excluded from school 4 times) had set the fire alarms off, after smashing the glass panel - big birds response, smash glass in case of emergency.... mum it was an emergency.... I laughed so much when the school told me I had to pay for the replacement glass.... I did remind them my son had a one to one statement and where was that support worker or even the class teacher?

Still makes me very angry - the way big bird was treated

been there chicken - thank fullly we found a good school for joe to attend. What I find difficult to get my head round though is that you have all these educated people who can't or don't want to tackle ASD - yet me amd Mrs J have to learn about ASD and sort out the best thing for Joe's eduction!

Anyway must go shirts to iron!

Chicken - I find you have to laugh or you'd end up a basket case.

On Monday I found Andre standing up in the wash basin in our shower room because he wanted a bath and we don't have one.

We have posted notes on our washing machine because he wants a Hotpoint and not a Miele.
