I wonder if he needs a stepping stone of sorts. Up here we have a cafe that is staffed by young adults with ASN. They do the cooking and front of house. I wonder if there’s something similar in your area where he could take a more finance based role and then use it to get something with a business.

The other thing we have is activity agreements which is basically an alternative to further education. They are coordinated and funded by the council. They have a list of providers who the YP can do a placement with and they get a weekly payment (£50 I think). Our local coordinator is fab and will set up placements based on interests/skills.

It occurs to me that we have measures written into legislation in Scotland to ensure a ‘positive destination’ for school leavers. The LA have a duty to support YP with ASN. Not sure of legislation elsewhere though.

Thank you, hp: all info I can gather will help. His uncle & aunt have found out much about what's available - and what is not. He was able to match almost all my ideas.

During the conversation, I came up with a three-part framework that the young person might manage himself, giving him greater ownership and responsibility. In many social situations, including school, he simply switches off. He's only recently gone shopping by himself for the first time.

What I came up with was a diary or journal centred around 'Personal', 'Skills', and 'Ambition' and powered by targets he'd set himself, e.g. a longer shopping trip. His uncle, a qualified teacher, was quite keen on this.

It must be fiendishly difficult and frustrating for young people in his situation, and their family, carers & friends to find out that the flexibility, empathy and understanding are in such short supply. As a footnote, he's receiving CAMSH support.

My searches brought up 'Into Work', a Scottish-based provision. I was impressed with the content & presentation.

It’s really frustrating. My son was basically out of school from second year but didn’t meet the criteria for access to the transitions team who work with YP up to age 25 to support the move to adult life. He didn’t meet the criteria partly because I am a proactive parent with some knowledge through my job.

I've just sat on the bus and cried reading this thread on Twitter. This hit such a nerve. I've walked out of Tesco before as there were too many types of potato. It took me 4 weeks to choose a new washing machine. Maybe im not just eccentric. The more I read the more I think I need to look at a formal diagnosis.

I think it could. The more I read the more I realise behaviours i've accepted as me being eccentric are possibly autistic traits. When we split up a few months ago my ex said she couldnt believe the washing machine took so long and what sort of adult was I? (Not in a bitchy way more one of disbelief).

Indecision is definitely evident with QP. I’ve often used the phrase ‘it’s not life changing just pick one’. He can’t answer the question ’what do you want for dinner’ but if I give him choices he can say he doesn’t want them. It’s bloody infuriating.

I’m also pretty indecisive and it often means things just don’t happen. My living room has been needing decorated for about 4 years. Too many decisions.
