More about Capes being 73 and concentrating on breeding budgies rather than lifting things.

That bodyweight thing is something I've been contemplating in recent weeks too. I'm deadlifting 90kg or so and I'm weighing about 85kg so I'm in a similar position. At the moment my weight is coming down slowly but my lifts are going up.

I'm squatting 70kg at the mo and that's also gradually increasing. If I keep going with the weight loss and strength gains I'm wondering where those two measurements will cross.

Perhaps that's what I need to do. Go on a diet so my weight drops down to weight I'm deadlifting. 😉😂

Might be a while before I'm lifting 90kg 😲 Just 65kg for me, but I did do it again today. Tried to lift with flatter shoes (I'd been using running shoes) and gosh, it felt harder. I thought flat shoes were supposed to be the thing for lifts? (Coach wants me to try in socks, but I'm a bit wary of the wooden gym floor in the barbell area.)

Because I'm lifting in a home gym, I just use socks.

I suppose I may be able to get used to socks, but at the moment the switch from running shoes to flat shoes (some flat Inov-8s) feels like I'm making it more difficult. Plus, I seem to spend so much time in the gym faffing/resting as opposed to doing, taking shoes off and on seems another step in the wrong direction.

"Proper" weightlifting shoes are more supportive and stable than most "spongy mid-sole" running shoes but they have quite a built up heel, I think to reduce the achilles tendon strain in the squat position. I don't have any and won't be buying any. I do prefer doing lifting in an old pair of innov-8s that have a very low heel.

quimby if you're lifting 65kg and weighing in 5kg less than that you're doing a better job than me %age wise. That's pretty good going.

You need less ankle flexibility for squatting in weightlifting shoes. You will also maintain a more upright torso Vs of you squat without them. It's a much better position for Olympic lifting.

For standard deadlift, a lot go with flat (as someone that does Olympic lifting, I generally stuck with weight lifting shoes as the deadlift serves as a strengthening exercise for the pull). You're not using the same range of motion as you would in a squat so it should be fine. I guess finding it harder will be down to slight changes in muscle recruitment which will make a difference at your limit.
