I'm still unsure what an air squat is???

Planks are involved in Mini Nico's rugby pre-season training plan of death. Up to 5 x 35 seconds at the moment. With 1 minute rest. Find them quite easy, but a big jump to 2 minutes.

A quick Google revealed this 2-min. film with guidance and notes on the air squat:

Hips lower than knees? Dear God, imagine the noise?

Sorry: Air squat is a squat without any added weight. Terminology is weird in this world. I've always seen "bodyweight squat" as being a squat with additional weight equivalent to your own bodyweight.

Also getting "below parrallel" (ie. hips below knees) in a squat is the way I've done squats since I've done squats, but I'm not carrying any old knee injuries so I guess you go as deep as you can without sound effects?

I saw that article on the Beeb this morning and it seems like the differences in blood pressure between the various exercise types are pretty small. Also, as others have noted, planking or wall squatting for 2 minutes is tough!

My expectation is that this will just be seen as validation for the "I'm not doing any cardio" crew.

Last para - yes, agree Nell.

Para 1 is what I thought. Hands on hips or holding an imaginary goblet or arms in front usually?

Deadlift I can now do Sue's bodyweight without my back hurting. Progress of a sort.

Arms do whatever they need for balance, Greg, as they're not needed to hold any additional weight. Mine usually go out in front and up a little.

I try and put them on my hips so my little muscles have to work harder for balance, in a brushing-your-teeth-on-one-leg kind of a way.

About which bit EvilPixie? Can you deadlift his wife's bodyweight too or do you think it's an excuse to not do cardio for anyone looking for one?

(It's like any specific narrow health advice really. It might be correct in isolation but none of us operate in only one field/activity/lifestyle and so many other factors come to bear on the problem under discussion, or interfere with any proposed solution.)
