oh and I try to alternate running and cycling, but that's because I don't want monotony or 80-mile working weeks

I used to run 3 miles to work and 3 back. I now run 1.5 to and same back. Its good to wake you up but I work shifts. Also, we have a shower at work which helps. Start of the week I pack my backpack, Berghaus 15ltr with waist and chest straps, with my clothes and food for the day. I run home with dirty underwear and shirt. So the next few days are lighter. Also with the bag, I have a bag liner inside to keep my clothes dry.
I also found recently that doing it daily got boring, although logged some small miles, you dont want to make it a chore. For speed work its good and for cramming it in when busy in the evenings.
And, most importantly! Its free and good for you. Tomorrow im taking a longer route home to clock my missing miles back up. You will love it and get used to it quickly. Loads of people at work have now taking it up and it can only be a good thing.

also, I tend to take breakfast or lunch to work with me. But it may work better for you to eat before, depending on time and distance.

I do most of training going to and from work. As long as I fold my shirt correctly, its fine for work.
I do about 50 miles per week and about 90% of this is going to work and back. I onl y live about 2 miles from work but will normally fit in either 4 miles in the morning and 6 to 7 miles in the evening or the other way round. Once a week I try to get in a 2 hour long run straight from work.
We have lockers and showers at work so I am lucky. If it wasn't for this I doubt I'd be running very much!

I ran to the station this morning through necessity and as it wasn't planned I had my shoes, clothes, big towel, toiletries, book, etc with me.
Learnings. I need a proper running pack with a chest strap and compression straps. Worries: How bad did I smell on the train?
