Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Any Fetchie (rock) climbers out there?

MudMeanderer - I don't think we have enough folk with the requisite skills for an outdoor event just yet

That's something that I've been confronting recently, MudMeanderer. Most of what we think of as upper body strength training is worse than useless for functional climbing strength. Climbers don't need muscle-ballast of the sort you get from pumping iron, but most climbers have beautiful upper bodies in a lean, non-rubbery sort of way :)

A Fetchie crag outing may be some way in the future unless someone else wants to organise it. What we have is a large house to put people up in and a choice of excellent indoor climbing walls.

ElBee and VRap, that's possibly true. I guess it depends where most folks are, how many would be interested (inc balance of leaders and novices) and what equipment could be pulled together. I'd nominally suggest somewhere like Dovestones Edge in the Northern Peak, that would be sufficiently remote to not have huge numbers and be full of low grade routes, and that could take a group, but if only one or two sets of gear could be found even setting up a couple of topropes may not prove a great intro to the sport.

MudMeanderer - That's not a bad idea! Logistically it could prove challenging though - climbing being an "It's sunny - let's go" kind of activity!!

It would be quite a good idea to find a suitable spot though - and introducing some new folk to the wonders of climbing on rock is an excellent idea.

Scraping together enough kit to set up a few top roped routes shouldn't be too difficult, I'd have thought
