Hi GP, they do seem to do resets at UCR fairly frequently. In fact they completely overhauled the boulder rooms about 2 or 3 weeks back.I am only a relative beginner, so I am not to concerned by resets - there are more than enough challenging routes to keep me going for a long while yet.

Has anyone been climbing in the Alps? If so, do you know any good bouldering areas?

emmie: I spent a week in Ailefroide (on the edge of the Ecrins National Park) a few years ago. There is some good bouldering in the valley around there, though i'm not sure how long it would keep you entertained for (we used it for short sessions on rest days). There is also a fair amount of decent low to medium grade sport climbing there as well.

You might get some strange looks going to the Alps for just bouldering though! Fair enough if you happen to be there and want something to waste a day or two, but there are places with bigger names if it's bouldering you're exclusively after (Font being the obvious example).

Bouldering in the Alps? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of going there?

I spend a few weeks in the Alps every summer. Mainly knocking off 4000ers, but also doing lower level rock routes etc. I've never bouldered

MountainCat: You'd have loved an competition I saw in one of the climbing magazines a few years ago. The prize; win a bouldering trip to the Himalaya!

My brother and I have a plan to do a few days light trekking and would like some bouldering entertainment on the way. Bouldering isn't the main aim, otherwise we'd be heading straight to Mello or Font as you said MudMeanderer! I live in Turin so we can easily access different parts of the Alps, I asked about bouldering mainly because it doesn't require too much gear.

On the Italian side of the alps, the other activity (better than bouldering IMO) that doesn't require much gear is Via Ferrata. Ever tried that?

Had a fantastic morning at the Reading Climbing Centre yesterday. Mini-FF aced her first 5+ (it was amazing to watch a tiny 7yo do this), Micro-FF got to the top of the beginners wall (several 3+ routes - though he rainbowed it).
As for me - well mostly belaying or supervising - but I did fail a 6a, but then I did manage one more move up it than before. Next time...

Aye, next time, FF :)

We loved watching our kids climbing when they were little. It's a bit of a tragedy when they have a big growth spurt and their centre of gravity suddenly isn't where they expect it to be and they take a step backwards :(

Fellmouse and I will be back at 6a before the end of March. Two sessions a week should be more than enough :)
